Since New Year’s Day, truck drivers travelling on many non-interstate highways in Illinois have been able to hit higher speeds after new state law went into effect in 2012. According to the Quad-City Times, Senate Bill 1913 raised the speed limit for semi-trucks on four-lane roads such as Illinois 92 near Interstate 280 from 55 m.p.h. to 65 m.p.h. Two years earlier, the Illinois General Assembly had approved the measure to allow tractor-trailers to travel at the same speed as passenger vehicle on certain interstate highways.
TRUCK ACCIDENT FAST FACT: According to TruckInjuries.com, about 27 percent of drivers of large trucks involved in a fatal truck accident had at least one prior speeding conviction. By contrast, 19 percent of drivers of passenger cars involved in a fatal crash committed previous speeding infractions.
