A bus carrying teenagers returning from a church summer camp overturned in Indianapolis near I-564 this afternoon. Newspapers are reporting that the bus driver told witnesses that his brakes failed, causing the bus to careen into a retaining wall as it rounded a curve and overturned. Three people were killed and 26 other children and adults were sent to the hospital. Was the bus driver properly trained? Well-rested? Did he perform a pre-trip inspection of his brakes? Who maintained the brakes and the rest of the bus? What kind of record does the driver have? How about the bus company? How did it come to be that this truck got on the road, with 37 adults and children, with failing brakes or a driver who, for no apparent reason, accelerated through an exit ramp. This is a horrible tragedy that must be fully investigated.
