The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has published the results from Roadcheck 2011. The findings: 19.9% of the large trucks were out-of-service (illegal to be on the road) for serious safety violations like malfunctioning brakes.
More than half (52.5%) of the drivers placed out-of-service were faulted for Hours of Service Violations during the 72-hour enforcement marathon (June 7-9), when all commercial vehicles from Canada to Mexico were subject to mandatory roadside safety inspections. HOS rules exist to keep fatigued drivers off the roads. The CVSA also notes that just 14% of drivers were found to be using logging devices.
During Roadcheck 2011, almost 8000 Commercial Vehicle Enforcement troopers, inspectors, trained Highway Patrol troopers, and other officers inspected safety equipment and checked log books, licenses, and endorsements at 2550 locations in North America.
