Nearly half the private trucking carriers in the United States are food and beverage distributors. Number one is Coca-Cola Enterprises, with 8,041 tractors, 3,114 straight trucks. and 9,263 trailers, according to the August 4, 2008 edition of industry trade magazine Transport Topics.
Private carriers transport their own products, as opposed to public carriers that haul for others, such as J.B. Hunt, Roadway, Shneider, Werner, and Yellow, to name some of the largest for-hire public motor carriers. Although these private trucking carriers may not be known as “trucking companies” to the general public, the trucks in their fleet are regulated by stringent trucking laws, just as public carriers are.
