When we last published this list in 2008, UPS was the largest public trucking carrier in the United States. It still is, with over 100,000 company trucks, tractors, trailers, vans, company cars and motorcycles. Number two remains FedEx, with more than 83,000 vehicles, according to the industry trade magazine Transport Topics , which provided this list. (Note that UPS reported having 253 aircraft in 2010, compared to FedEx’s 664.)
In 2010, all the Top 10 largest public trucking companies retained their rankings from 2008. It’s not till No. 12, where Sirva moved up from No. 19, that we start to see some changes.
Public trucking carriers transport products for others. Whether or not a company is considered a “trucking company” by the general public, any commercial truck operating in the U.S. is regulated by stringent state laws, as well as federal trucking laws if they cross state lines in commerce.
