The debate over a governmental mandate calling for all commercial trucks to be equipped with Electronic On-Board Recorders ran into another obstacle recently when the House of Representatives approved a bill that would block funding for any such measure. The bill, spearheaded by Rep. Jeff Landry (R-La.), adds more distance between EOBRs and the increased safety they would provide.
The battle over mandating EOBR devices, which would help monitor truck drivers' hours-of-service records, has run into plenty of political resistance in recent years. It's been argued that EOBR devices would lead to potential harassment of truck drivers by their employers. And it's been argued that mandating them is simply too expensive.
But when all the legal wrangling is done, it's important that EOBRs find their way into more truck cabs. Hours-of-service violations are a leading contributor to truck accident fatalities in our country, and one sure way to control that damage is to make sure that drivers aren't exceeding the amount of time they're allowed behind the wheel each week.

Like many, I continue to support the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's efforts to see an EOBR mandate became a reality. While I understand concerns regarding driver harassment and cost, in the end increasing the safety and welfare of all drivers should ultimately take precedence.
