On June 25, 2015, the world lost Jason Ramos. To those who knew him, he was a beacon of hope and a pillar of community and service. At 36 years old, Jason lost his life in a catastrophic truck crash outside of Chattanooga, TN that took six lives and injured six more.
It was a crash that left Hamilton County and its communities reeling as well as the loved ones of those involved in the crash. Among those was Jason’s mother Patricia.
Since losing her oldest son, Pat has become a relentless advocate in the fight for road safety. Armed with the memory of Jason, she has joined the many voices of those who are on a mission to improve the trucking industry's safety practices and champion the vital reforms that will make our communities and roads safer.
About Jason
Jason was the epitome of family-oriented dedication and a beacon within his community. His role as Assistant Director of Resident Life and the founding force behind the Birdfeeder program at Dalton State College showcased his profound commitment to nurturing and supporting those around him.
With a heart firmly rooted in giving back, Jason's efforts went beyond mere contributions; they reflected a deeply ingrained desire to make a lasting positive impact. Those who knew him were touched by his generosity, his unwavering dedication to family and community, and his ability to inspire positive change. Jason's legacy is a testament to the powerful influence one individual can have on the lives of many, leaving a lasting impression that continues to resonate within the community today.
Jason’s Crash
The 2015 crash that took Jason's life was the deadliest crash that Hamilton County, TN had experienced in 21 years. The aftermath initiated an investigation led by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which uncovered critical systemic failures within the trucking industry. The investigation highlighted the relentless pressures drivers face to adhere to rigorous schedules, often resulting in unsafe decisions and catastrophic outcomes.
It was determined that, in Jason’s crash, the truck driver's methamphetamine use and significant lack of rest were primary contributing factors, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced safety regulations and rigorous oversight within the trucking industry.

The Cost of Stalled Insurance Minimums
A pivotal yet often overlooked element of the tragedy surrounding Jason's crash is the glaring insufficiency of insurance coverage. While not often thought of as a safety measure in the same way things like speed limiters, automatic emergency brakes, and broker immunity issues are, motor carrier insurance minimums are crucial to advancing road safety.
Despite escalating medical expenses, insurance minimums for trucking accidents have remained at $750,000 since 1980, failing to provide for the actual costs incurred by catastrophic truck accidents. This discrepancy not only places an undue financial strain on victims' families but also on taxpayers, highlighting a critical need for legislative action to adjust insurance minimums, so they are more in line with modern-day medical costs and rising inflation. What's more, $750,000 coverage is per crash, not per person involved, so in multi-vehicle crashes like Jason’s those involved must divide this amount among each other.
Adjusted for medical inflation this $750,000 would equate to just under $5.5 million in 2023.
A Mother’s Journey to Advocacy
Driven by the memory of her son and bolstered by the support of safety advocates, Patricia stepped onto the national stage in 2022 to champion trucking safety reforms in Washington DC. At the Institute for Safer Trucking's Safety Roundtable, Patricia found a platform to voice her concerns, share Jason's story with lawmakers, and push for critical safety reforms.
Her advocacy focused on safety measures such as automatic emergency braking, adjusting insurance minimums, and enforcing more rigorous driver vetting processes. These initiatives, had they been in place in 2015, might have saved her son's life.
Patricia's path to prominent safety advocate is a testament to the enduring power of a mother's love and the profound impact personal tragedy can have on catalyzing change. Her efforts not only honor Jason's legacy but also embody his spirit of contributing positively to the community.
Patricia's work highlights the pressing need for comprehensive safety reforms in the trucking industry, ensuring the protection of all road users and preventing future tragedies.
