Most of the funds went to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, which received $1,963,108 to carry out safety audits, compliance reviews, and inspections throughout the state (including ports of entry and borders). The North Dakota Department of Transportation won $349,131 to set up a statewide electronic commercial driver's license testing system.

While the grants were being announced in Bismarck, North Dakota, law officers all over North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming were performing safety inspections on buses and their drivers.
This grant follows a recent move by the FMCSA to bolster Pennsylvania commercial vehicle regulations and enforcement. Both sets of grants are part of the agency's commercial truck and bus safety grant programs.
