Less than a month before claiming a somewhat more-heralded victory, President Barack Obama announced an important win for U.S. military veterans who aspire to a career as a commercial truck driver.
In mid-October, the President signed the Military Commercial Driver's License Act of 2012, making it easier for veterans of the armed forces to obtain CDL certification. Under the new law, vets can get the CDL training they need while still enlisted in the military in preparation for civilian life.
We at TruckAccidents.com are strong supporters of our troops, and this move is clearly a step in the right direction toward helping veterans adjust to life after the military. The President should be applauded for making more practical use of the skills that members of the armed forces acquire while serving in the military. And as advocates for measures that increase trucking safety, we will watch with great interest the effects that this law has on the trucking industry. We make every effort to ensure that only responsible, qualified drivers are entrusted with operating commercial vehicles, and we're hopeful that the MCDL Act of 2012 will in no way comprise those standards.
By helping employ veterans in need of work, and by helping fill the industry's countless truck driver openings with qualified people, the MCDL Act of 2012 is definitely a worthy attempt to satisfy a number of needs with one stroke of the pen.
