July 12, 2011 -- A new piece of trucking legislation moving through both houses would drive higher spending on collision warning systems such as Bendix's VORAD. Two and a half years ago, when we wrote the post below about Eaton selling VORAD to Bendix, we observed that "while the government isn’t ready to mandate the use of collision warning systems like VORAD, it admits that accidents could be reduced by as much as 50 percent through their use."

Now it looks like the government is taking steps to encourage such systems, if not mandate them. The Commercial Motor Vehicle Advanced Safety Technology Tax Act of 2011 (S. 1233), introduced by Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), would reward fleets with five-year tax credits for 50% of the costs of safety systems.
