This month, the United States and Canadian governments have collaborated with motor carriers and the insurance industry to launch the North American Fatigue Management Program (NAFMP). NAFMP is a comprehensive website that provides education and training to help reduce bus and truck driver fatigue. Drivers can register at the website free of charge, work through the ten online training modules (available as Powerpoint presentations with or without audio narration) and take quizzes in each module. Involving all participants in the transportation cycle, the program is designed for 9 hours and 15 minutes of instruction for carrier management, 4 hours and 15 minutes of instruction for drivers, 45 minutes of instruction for drivers’ families, 30 minutes of instruction for shippers and receivers, and 1 hour of instruction for dispatchers, with an option for an extra hour of advanced training for drivers.
The ten modules cover the following areas:
FMP Introduction and Overview
Safety Culture and Management Practices
Driver Education
Driver Family Education
Train-the-Trainer for Driver Education and Family Forum
Shippers and Receivers
Motor Carrier Sleep Disorders Management
Driver Sleep Disorders Management
Driver Scheduling and Tools
Fatigue Monitoring and Management Technologies

Viewing and reading the PowerPoints and taking the quizzes can not only help those involved in the transportation cycle, but can help truck litigation lawyers who defend or bring claims against truck companies to understand the industry standards in this area.
If you don’t wish to review the 931 slides in the ten modules, I will give an overview of each of these modules in my next 10 blog posts.
