Those inspectors recently received words of wisdom from industry brass.
National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Deborah Hersman urged attendees at the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s annual conference in Maine to look for patterns of safety violations that might help identify high-risk carriers and truck drivers. In other words, it’s important to identify case-by-case violations, but using that information to signal larger problems will go a long way toward reducing fatal crashes involving tractor-trailers and other commercial vehicles.

Hersman is right. Trucking companies and truck drivers who display a willingness to repeatedly violate safety rules and regulations are more likely to be involved in avoidable crashes down the road.
The NTSB, along with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, have taken great strides in attempting to reduce highway fatalities through measures such as electronic on-board recorders, hours-of-service limits, and bans on cell phone use. This recent call for a “big-picture” approach to identifying violators provides further evidence of their commitment to making our roads safer for everyone.
