The New York City bus company responsible for a March 12 crash that killed 15 people in the Bronx seems to have reincarnated, despite having lost its license in June. Michael Shub, who owned World Wide Travel at the time of the multiple fatality bus crash, now appears to be operating World Wide Bus, which runs the same buses on much the same routes that his previous firm did, out of the same Brooklyn office.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration closed World Wide Travel for serious safety violations. Officials said the carrier had not made any improvements after the multiple fatality bus crash on I-95 in March, when a bus coming back from Connecticut's Mohegan Sun casino lost control. Ophadell Williams, who was driving that bus, was indicted on charges including manslaughter, and the firm was closed, in part for Hours-of-Service violations.

Back From the Dead
Yet Shub's World Wide Bus company now offers service between New York and two Boston suburbs, while his Long Island Transit firm still runs scheduled buses between Nassau County and New York City. According to the New York Times, most of World Wide Travel’s buses were transferred over the summer to Great Escapes, a Shub company which provides vehicles for the two firms.
Shub's lawyer says state records are out of date and that Mark Fayer (a former World Wide Travel dispatch supervisor) now owns Great Escapes.
A 2009 Government Accountability Office report found that 9 percent or more of companies that lose their operating certificates for safety reasons reincarnate under different names.
I took a case to trial in which a reincarnated or "chameleon" carrier had re-formed at least four times. Due to the egregiousness of its actions, the jury found that punitive damagesDamages designed to punish a defendant or set an example (in some states, called exemplary damages). were appropriate against the owner. Now that the New York Times is tracking this particular situation, we will keep you posted on its progress.
