We applaud President Obama and his efforts to combat distracted driving. As part of his proposed 2013 budget, the administration has included $330 million as part of its six-year transportation spending plan to fund programs that target distracted driving.
Text messaging while driving has drawn the scorn of safe-driving advocates nationwide, and currently 35 states ban texting while driving. But only nine states prohibit drivers from using handheld cell phones, according to the Governor's Highway Safety Association. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration already outlaws cell phone usage by truck drivers behind the wheel, but the president's efforts to shine more light on the problem of distracted driving will only help improve the safety of our roadways.
