I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the victims of today's tragic tanker truck and school van accident on I-70 near State Route 40 in Clark County, Ohio, the latest families to suffer the pain of losing a loved one in a truck accident.

The crash occurred just after noon when the tanker truck left the westbound lane of the interstate, crossed the median, entered the eastbound lane and sideswiped one vehicle before slamming into the van of school children. A paramedic responding to the scene said that five people lost their lives in the crash and seven more were injured. He noted that all of the deceased were in the school van.

Initial reports indicate that a video of the scene shows a significant base of snow on the interstate in the area of the crash. Drivers of commercial vehicles are required to take road conditions into consideration when operating their vehicles. Certain conditions such as snow or ice, rain or wind can have a significant impact on the safe operation of large commercial trucks and can mean having to slow considerably in order to retain control of such vehicles.

In my experience, every truck accident has a cause. It now falls to investigators, law enforcement officials and qualified attorneys to help discover the cause of this horrible accident so that justice may be served and also so that anything learned may be used to help prevent similar events in the future.
