Entrepreneurialism is alive and well in America. Where a need exists, an ambitious business owner with an idea isn’t far behind.
We need healthier truck drivers, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
Now a business-minded spirit has followed with an idea.
Hoping to accommodate truckers’ need for a place to exercise, Snap Fitness, a Texas-based health club chain, is planning to open gyms at truck stops nationwide, beginning with a club on Interstate 20 at the Flying J in Dallas.

This is a great idea, providing an opportunity to truckers who too often are either at work behind the wheel or asleep in the back of their cabs. Such an inactive lifestyle has fueled a trend in truck driver obesity, a reality that in recent years the trucking industry has begun tackling with health and wellness initiatives of its own. Many carriers already offer their drivers fitness incentives and weight-loss programs.
But truck stop fitness clubs offer a convenience that should work well with drivers’ busy schedules on the road, and could be critical in the battle to encourage drivers to stay fit and lose weight. Obesity has been traced to numerous traffic dangers, most notably its effects on sleep apnea. Drivers who aren’t well-rested after sleeping become a danger behind the wheel, and thus a danger to any of us on the road.
Hopefully this latest example of the entrepreneurial spirit will help right that trend.
